5 Top Tips on How to save money on Laundry Detergent – Frugal tips and hints

Laundry! I’m pretty sure it’s safe to say that no one ever feels super excited when they hear the word. Or, for that matter when they look at their overflowing laundry basket and realize it’s in need of attention. Sure, laundry is not the most exciting activity in the world, but it is a necessity. And, once you do tackle the laundry, it always feels great to have loads (ha! pun) of clean clothes again.

When we’re talking laundry, then laundry detergent obviously comes into the conversation too. So, today I wanted to share some tips on how to save on buying your next batch of laundry detergent.

1. Use less

Okay, call me Ms. Obvious – but using less does save a lot of money. But, did you know that it also helps clean your clothes better? Using too much laundry detergent creates a sort of film on your clothing, preventing them from getting really good and clean. I like using Tide Pods, and I find that the clothes in even a very large load of laundry come out very nice and clean using only 1 pod. Whereas, the package itself recommends using up to 3 for a large load. Nope, stick with one unless you have a very soiled load of laundry on your hands, in which case 2 pods would be plenty.

If you use other types of detergent, the same principle applies – use the least amount the manufacturer recommends. It will still clean your clothes very well. That means using far less than a full cap when you’re using liquid detergent, so watch out to not overpour! (I swear they design those things so that we pour out way too much, therefore using more detergent of course. Ugh.)

2. Use a better detergent

This seems counterintuitive. I’m talking about SAVING on laundry detergent, and then I go and tell you to buy a better brand! But, if you buy the better detergents when they’re on sale, you can use principle #1 listed above – using less will go a lot farther. Then you’re saving money AND helping out the environment by not overusing cleaning products.

Maybe a bottle of premium liquid detergent costs $12.99 regular price, but then is greatly reduced down occasionally to $7.99 a bottle. It would make sense to buy a couple of bottles then, so that you won’t have to pay full price EVER.

3. Shop the sales

I have a couple of methods to find out when laundry detergent will be on sale. I put my favourite detergent – like I said, I’m all about the Tide Pods – in my Amazon cart. Then I get notified as the price goes up or down. OR…the other, more traditional way is to check flyers. Always check out flyers before you go grocery shopping, and if you do that often you’ll get to know what a good sale price is for your favourite detergent.

4. Use a coupon (on a sale price, ideally!)

Yes, you can use coupons on sale prices! Coupons aren’t generally as easy to find as they used to be, but keep your eyes open because sometimes you can still find some in coupon inserts, online, or even hanging on the shelf near the product. Whenever you see a coupon on a shelf for a product you love, grab that coupon! Because those coupons probably will never be available when there’s a sale or promotion going on. But, if you keep your coupons organized (even in a little envelope in your handbag!) then you’re ready to save whenever you see a good price.

5. Get detergent for free

Free is our absolute favourite price around here! And, since you’re reading this article I think it’s safe to assume that you like free-ness too. Check out local Facebook groups or even websites like Kijiji and search for ‘free detergent’ or ‘free cleaners.’ Sometimes people who are moving just want to get rid of cleaning stuff they can’t take with them on their move.

You can also do a swap with a friend. Let them know what cleaning items you need – such as laundry detergent – and then tell them what you have to give away. This is a great way to try new cleaners or other products, while getting rid of things you don’t need or use.

One more way to get laundry detergent for free? Samples at Costco of course! Oh, sweet Costco samples…(Love Costco too? Check out all our articles about Costco right here.)
