Wednesdays are Movie Twosome days at Landmark Cinemas

Along with millions of other humans around the world, I am a huge fan of the new movie Project Hail Mary! I did in fact read the book before heading to the movie theatre with my Hub, and loved it so much that I’m back on the Libby waiting list to read it again.

I haven’t left a movie feeling so good in years. How on earth (Ha! it wasn’t…) can a little critter with no actual face to speak of move us so deeply? Even the Hub nearly shed tears…Little Rocky pulls at the heartstrings in the most authentic way. Both in the book AND in the movie. And Ryan Gosling was stunning in this film – his ‘thankfulness’ scene is one I won’t quickly forget. That one had me not only with tears streaming down my face, but a very strong need to suppress actual SOBS.

We had intended to go to AMA to get $13 basic movie tickets, which is a great deal. But, we didn’t plan far enough ahead to get those bargain tickets. And, the lineup at AMA was so long that if we’d continued waiting we would’ve missed the matinee movie we wanted to see!

So, we decided to just lump it and pay the full price. So, I was pretty thrilled when we arrived at the theatre in Calgary to find out that Wednesdays are Movie Twosome Days. You get a nice deal of two admission tickets, one large popcorn, two fountain drinks, and a large candy. Great!! We wanted to get snacks anyway, so this deal at $46.19 (I believe that was before GSTI) was perfect for us. 🙂

Options for candy & drinks

We chose a pouch of Turtles candies (YUMMMM!) and the fountain drinks are those new ‘pop machines’ that literally have about 100 options. The sugarless/sugar free options included diet pop of course, but also no-sugar options like AHA sparkling water. I had a lemonade the first go round, and then since the large drink comes with a free refill, when the movie was done I sauntered back over to the fountain drink machine and got myself a Lemon Lime AHA sparkling water as a refill. Something nice to sip on on the drive home!

The beauty of day-old movie popcorn…

It can’t be just me, right? Is day-old movie popcorn one of the most salty and satisfyingly delicious snacks you’ve ever munched on? I had that big bag of popcorn all to myself, and it’s still almost gone. Haha.

Oh, and speaking of the yummy popcorn…you can pay an upcharge (not sure the exact cost) at the till for melted real butter. Or, if you’re cheap (frugal, frugal!) like me, you can opt for the ‘Buttery topping’ that is included for free. I shudder to think of what that topping might contain for ingredients, but hey when you’re on a budget you become a little less paranoid about these things.

So, check out a movie on a Wednesday and get yourself a pretty good deal by going for the Movie Twosome deal. Sure, it’s still not cheap. Going to an actual movie theatre never is…but you get the entire movie experience with lovely snacks tossed in for under $50 for 2 people. Not bad at all.

  • Project Hail Mary, the book – If you don’t want to wait on Libby or your local library for the actual book. This is one I would re-read over and over, so it might be worth the investment.
  • A pretty bookmark – Totally not on theme with the book, of course, but too exquisite to not include here.
  • And a space-y bookmark – On theme, and quite cool for kids and adults alike. These are the mini magnetic type of bookmark. Oh, I just thought of it: How sweet would it be to include one or an entire packet of these along with the Project Hail Mary book as a gift for a friend?

Comfy seats at the theatre

Yes, at the theatre we went to those comfy reclining seats were available at that special price. There are also Premiere seats – those ones are heated recliners, with space for coats and purses. I think you pay a premium price for those, and we didn’t need anything that fancy. The recliners were great, and come in twos or individuals.

Oh, and we had the whole place to ourself! Except for about 30 minutes when – maybe workers? – popped in to watch for a while. So, we felt pretty swanky with nearly an entirely theatre just for us. Made for a lovely and peaceful way to watch the movie. I highly recommend odd times for going to the movies! (We went at around noon on a weekday.)
