Frugal Food: Fried Egg Sandwiches PLUS 6 Ways to Make it Greater

Oh, I’m all about a delicious, crisp-edged fried egg sandwich. Now, don’t get me wrong – I am rather an egg sandwich fan altogether. I also adore a delicious, creamy mayo-filled egg salad sandwich. But, for ease of preparation and also the speed with which you can make a fried egg sandwich, well, I guess it has to be one of my all-time favourite sandwiches.

The Basics: How to Make a Fried Egg

Sorry if this seems beyond basic. I know that many of you who will read this article will be well acquainted with making a fried egg that is just right for you. And that’s great! But, just in case there are some viewers/readers who don’t make fried eggs, then I want to give you this rundown on how to do it.

  1. Pick the right pan. I still really like using a nonstick pan for this, but I have a Henckels one that is a lovely quality – by that I mean it is nice and heavy. Cast iron pans are also perfect for cooking the perfect fried eggs! I would say that generally a stainless steel pan is not the right pan to choose for frying eggs. It is just too easy for the eggs to get irritatingly stuck on the surface of that pan.
  2. Pick the right temperature to cook. A good medium is all you need. Especially when using nonstick pans, you won’t want a high temperature.
  3. Choose the fat. A fried egg sandwich is not low-fat. It is fried after all. Which is what makes it delightful! (If you ask me; haha.) You can use a bit of butter or margarine, or you can use a cooking oil like sunflower or canola. Olive oil has too strong a taste – but maybe you like that, in which go ahead and use it! I like to use a more neutral-tasting oil.
  4. Heat the pan, then heat the oil. This is a cooking skill that is important to learn beyond something simple like frying eggs. First allow your pan to heat up, and then add your fat – oil or butter – and allow it to heat up a bit too.
  5. Add the cracked eggs. Crack your egg(s) and then release the eggs into the awaiting heated fat.
  6. Add basic seasonings. This is salt and pepper, people! Well seasoned eggs taste so much more delicious. Sprinkle s&p right onto the surface of your cooking egg.
  7. Cook it until it’s right for you. I like to break the yolk up a bit, as I prefer a very well cooked egg, and one that has lovely lightly browned crisped edges. Oh yum! I’m getting hungry just thinking about it! But, if you enjoy the lusciousness of a runny egg yolk, then leave the egg alone – don’t break the yolk.
  8. Flip it! Flip the egg carefully using a spatula. (My very favourite one is a thin hard plastic variety.) Continue cooking until the egg is done how you like it. And of course, if you like sunny side up eggs (fried eggs that have not been flipped) then you can do that too, and leave your egg unflipped. Unthinkable if you ask me. Haha 😉

While the egg is cooking, toast up your bread that you’ll be using for your sandwich, and butter it well. Then you can top your buttered toast with the cooked egg, adding a little more salt and pepper on top if you so choose.

6 Ways to Make your Fried Egg Sandwich Extra Special

  1. Avocado – You can add slices of nicely ripened avocado on top of your sandwich, or just put some on the bottom and mush it up, then add the egg on top. Your choice, maestro!
  2. Hot sauce – This one is kind of a given! Adding dashes of hot sauce on top of the fried egg will give it a lovely kick of spiciness that elevates the flavour. I like a milder type hot sauce, as I don’t want the heat to dominate.
  3. Sauteed veggies – There is just about nothing that cannot be made better by adding sauteed veggies – especially that lovely combination of sauteed onions and peppers. Add this combo on the top of your sandwich, for a little extra crunch and a whole lot more delicious taste.
  4. Funky condiments – Thin slices of pickle, or a spoonful of drained kimchi can add a crunch and tang to your sandwich. And so can other condiments – like a red pepper spread. (I recently bought some, thinking it was hummus. What I thought was a sad mistake turned out to be truly delightful! I’m using that stuff on everything.)
  5. Bacon. Of course, an addition of bacon or ham – or the vegetarian versions of the same – adds a delicious salty meatiness that is hard to beat.
  6. This is a bonus idea! And I’ll have to change the title above to say 6 ideas rather than 5. Haha. 🙂 Greens, people, greens!! Whether it’s cooked kale, or spinach, or perhaps some leafy lettuce or spicy and peppery arugula – greens are a tasty and nutritious topper for your egg sandwich. And it adds an impressive boost of green colour to your make as well.

Best Times to Eat a Fried Egg Sandwich

Anytime! I have literally eaten fried egg sandwiches for breakfast (obviously), lunch, supper or even later at night if supper just didn’t fill me up. The combination of carbs and protein in the bread and eggs makes it a perfect meal anytime of the day. There is honestly not a single time of day that I can’t imagine eating one of these delicious creations. 🙂 Enjoy!
